Domino's
According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), “Nearly all breeding pigs used to make pepperoni, sausage and ham for Domino’s [Pizza] are confined day and night during their four-month pregnancies in gestation crates: cages barely larger than the pigs’ own bodies, preventing the animals even from turning around. The pigs are placed into another crate to give birth and are then re-impregnated and put back into a gestation crate. This cycle repeats, pregnancy after pregnancy, for the animals’ entire lives.”
HSUS challenged Domino’s pizza at their annual shareholder meeting, on April 25, to stop using pork suppliers who confine breeding pigs in gestation crates. The gestation crates are only approximately 2 feet wide and immobilize the animal for its entire life so it cannot even turn around to scratch an itch.
According to dairyherd.com, Domino’s Pizza shareholders voted against the resolution by the Humane Society of the United States to require its pork suppliers to stop using gestation crates by an astonishing 80% of shareholders.
Sign the petition started by Rina Khadivi at change.org where she says, “McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s have all agreed to phase cruel gestation crates (tiny crates for pregnant pigs) out of their supply chains. Why can’t Domino’s do the same to take a stance against intenstive [insensitive] confinement?
You can also show Domino’s Pizza shareholders that you’re against animal abuse and you can vote with your wallet by buying your pizza elsewhere.

Apps
A Pizza Hero App for iPad from Domino’s aims at having you try to rise through the ranks of pizza chefs to become a Pizza Hero. You’re expected to make perfect pizzas by kneading dough, spreading tomato sauce and cheese, and adding toppings, “as you race against the clock”. You’ll compete against other pizza makers on the Domino’s Leaderboards.
I wonder if you’ll also have to deliver the virtual pizza pies. After all, the Domino’s brand is fast delivery!

Pizza Crust
Domino’s Pizza is now offering a gluten-free pizza crust. Domino’s president and CEO J. Patrick Doyle stated that the gluten-free pizza crust came about because of customer requests.
It’s likely that Domino’s believes that there is sufficient consumer demand to increase revenue since Domino’s will be charging an additional $3 for a small (10″) gluten-free pizza pie. It may be a little more expensive to produce, but that probably also includes additional profit. However, it’s unlikely that people with gluten intolerance will complain.
Domino’s said the gluten-free pizzas will be prepared and baked in kitchens that also cook regular pizza dough, so cross-contamination could be an issue for people with severe gluten intolerance or severe symptoms of celiac disease.
Domino’s website states: “Domino’s pizza made with a Gluten Free Crust is prepared in a common kitchen with the risk of gluten exposure. The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness supports the availability of Domino’s Gluten Free Crust, but CANNOT recommend the pizza for customers with celiac disease. Customers with gluten sensitivities should exercise judgment in consuming this pizza.”
However, this is a great move on the part of Domino’s because at least the majority of people suffering from gluten intolerance will be able to eat pizza!
